Speaking at a press conference, Sader called for calm, saying that only members of the same family who attended the wedding last Saturday were being treated for cholera.

Venezuela has taken necessary measures to establish epidemiological screens against the disease, which had not been seen in the country since 2000, Sader said.

All drinking water supplies in the country had been chlorined and health staff deployed at seaports and airports to prevent people traveling from and to the Dominican Republic from getting infected, she said.

Sader also said Venezuela has reserved 10,000 doses of medicine for treating cholera.

The death toll from a cholera epidemic that has hit Haiti since last October has risen to nearly 4,000 and about 250 cases have been reported in the neighboring Dominican Republic. Kazinform cites Xinhua. See www.xinhuanet.com for full version
