UNICEF, EU and Kazakhstan discuss reintegration of children returned from conflict zones

Chief of the Kazakh National Centre for Human Rights Saltanat Turssynbekova took part in the coordination meeting that took place as part of the joint program of UNICEF, EU and Kazakh government ‘EU-UN Support to the States in Central Asia for their Citizens Returned from Conflict Zones’, Kazinform News Agency reports.

The EU-funded program aims at supporting women, children and families returned from conflict zones, and their reintegration in communities.

Within the framework of the project, work is ongoing to ensure strategic management, exchange of information, and coordination and mutual support between the partners for reintegration and protection of children repatriated from conflict zones as well as continuous coordination of greater protection of children in Kazakhstan.

The meeting focused the strengthening of child protection institution and social support for integration in communities the children who lived in conflict zones. In addition, joint measures to assist local executive bodies and schools in resocialization and education of children were considered.

The sides also discussed the enhancement of children’s protection in Kazakhstan to ensure full coverage of all vulnerable children with social services.

Kazakhstan is among the first countries to repatriate its citizens from conflict zones in Iraq and Syria. So far, Kazakhstan has repatriated 526 children, providing them with comprehensive government support to adapt to life in the country.
