UNGA unanimously adopts resolution to rehabilitate Semipalatinsk region
The UN General Assembly unanimously adopted the resolution on international cooperation and coordination of the activities in rehabilitation of the population, environmental restoration and economic development of the Semipalatinsk region of Kazakhstan, Kazinform News Agency reports citing the press office of the Kazakh Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
This became the 11th resolution of the UN General Assembly on the Semipalatinsk region. The first one was adopted in 1997. 85 member countries of the UN are the co-authors of the resolution.
The document became clear evidence of concern of the international community over long-term consequences of nuclear tests for people’s lives and health, in particular, for children and other vulnerable groups.
The document acknowledges an important role of the Kazakh government in allocating the resources to meet the region’s needs and calls on the international community to assist Kazakhstan in development and implementation of special programs and the programs of treating affected groups, as well as in its efforts to ensure the economic growth and sustainable development of the Semipalatinsk region.
