UN calls on world to collect $1.44 bln for quake-hit Haiti

UN. February 19. KAZINFORM The United Nations has called on the international society to collect $1.44 billion in aid for Haiti, which was hit by devastating quake last month; Kazinform refers to RIA Novosti.
The UN has earlier called to collect $575 million, half of which has been already received.
A 7.0 magnitude earthquake devastated Haiti on January 12. Estimates as to the final death toll in the earthquake range to over 220,000 in and around the capital Port-au-Prince.
More than three million have been left without shelter.
The collected money will be used to deliver food, water, medicine and to provide security. Restoration work is funded separately; Kazinform cites RIA Novosti.
