Ukraine’s Yushchenko to protest presidential election law in court

KIEV. September 3. KAZINFORM. Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko will protest the new presidential election law in the Constitutional Court, should it take effect, the presidential press-service said. Yushchenko returned the bill to parliament without his signature. Under the law the speaker of parliament can sign it into law; Kazinform refers to Itar-Tass.

The Ukrainian parliament at the end of August overrode the presidential veto on the bill. Yushchenko claims that this piece of legislation abuses some of citizens' rights. In part, the law cancels absentee ballot voting.

"I reserve the opportunity to use my right to lodge a protest with the Constitutional Court, if the law comes into force," Yushchenko said in a message addressed to the speaker of parliament. The presidential election is due on January 17, 2010; Kazinform cites Itar-Tass.
