U.S. offers C. America 200 mln dollars for fight against drug trafficking

TEGUCIGALPA. February 10. KAZINFORM U.S. Assistant Secretary of State William Brownfield on Wednesday offered 200 million U.S. dollars to Central American countries for the fight against drug trafficking. Kazinform refers to Xinhua.

Brownfield told reporters that the money will be for the seven countries of Central America -- Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama.

On Wednesday he met with Honduran Security Minister Oscar Alvarez and also went to the Amarateca Valley to visit the Eagle Nest facilities where U.S. staff train Honduran police officers.

Brownfield will stay in Honduras till Thursday to discuss cooperation efforts aimed to improve the safety of the people, the combat against organized crime and the strengthening of the state of law.

Meanwhile, the U.S. embassy in Tegucigalpa said that Honduran President Porfirio Lobo and U.S. ambassador Hugo Llorens will sign an agreement under which 1.75 million U.S. dollars will be given to improve the prisons and border security.
