U.S. Embassy in Astana cleans city, plants trees on Earth Day
Earth Day, April 22, is a global holiday celebrating the environment and a time for all people to assess the work still needed to protect the natural gifts of our planet. Earth Day celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2010. It was initiated by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson, a long-time conservationist, who in 1970 wanted to protest the man-made destruction of the environment. Today, it has evolved into a global celebration of the environment and a commitment to its protection. The history of Earth Day mirrors the growth of environmental awareness over the last three decades, and the legacy of Earth Day is the certain knowledge that the environment is a universal concern, a press release of the U.S. Embassy in Kazakhstan reads.
