U.S. Congress highlights Kazakh President's role in ensuring stability and progress

ASTANA. November 27. KAZINFORM Secretary of State-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Kanat Saudabayev has held a number of meetings with the White House representatives and U.S. congressmen today, on the last day of his visit to Washington.

At the meeting with Gary Seymour, the White House Coordinator for control over armament, mass destruction weapons and terrorism, the parties discussed the prospects of Kazakhstan-U.S. cooperation in nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation.

G. Seymour praised Astana's efforts in nuclear non-proliferation and confirmed the U.S. Government's support of Kazakhstan's initiative to deploy the nuclear fuel bank in its territory under the IAEA aegis.

The parties expressed satisfaction with completion of the second large-scale project on transportation of the BN-350 reactor's fuel for secure long-term storage. Successful implementation of the joint project proves fruitful and real cooperation of both states in this sphere.

At the meeting with Special Assistant to the U.S. President for National Security Affairs Michael McFaul the parties focused on the urgent issues of bilateral and regional cooperation as well as on strengthening the economic component of the Kazakh-American interaction. The parties touched upon also such important aspects as the situation in Kyrgyzstan and Afghanistan.

Kanat Saudabayev had also meetings with U.S. Senator Joseph Lieberman, Chairperson and co-Chair of the U.S. Helsinki Commission Benjamin Cardin and U.S. Congressman Alcee L. Hastings during which the American partners appreciated Kazakhstan's chairmanship in the OSCE including its major results - organization of the Summit and adoption of the Astana Declaration.

The parties stressed the importance of the problems discussed at the Summit, the necessity of further strengthening the Organization's potential and importance of further close interaction with Kazakhstan within the OSCE Troika.

The U.S. Congress members highlighted the role of President Nursultan Nazarbayev in successful implementation of the policy of stability and progress, promotion of Kazakhstan's international initiatives contributing to ensuring stability in Central Asia and the entire world.
