Two regions of Kazakhstan may face drought this year

At today’s Government meeting, Kazakh Ecology and Natural Resources Minister Yerlan Nyssanbayev has warned that several regions may face drought risks in the coming months, Qazinform News Agency reports.

He stressed Kostanay, Akmola, North Kazakhstan, East Kazakhstan, and West Kazakhstan regions report mostly satisfactory and optimal moisture reserves in the one-meter soil layer, while Aktobe, Pavlodar, and Karaganda regions record satisfactory reserves.

He noted rising air temperatures could quickly dry out the upper arable soil layer, leading to localized moisture deficits. Pastures in Shalkar district in Aktobe region and Korday district in Zhambyl region are at risk of drought.

It was reported earlier, Kazakhstan’s sown area reaches 23.8 mln hectares.
