Today is International Mountain Day
The UN General Assembly called on the international community to devote this Day to propagating the importance of sustainable development of mountainous areas. The corresponding resolution of the General Assembly highlights the relevance of the actions directed on sustainable development of the mountainous regions. The enlightening activities include, as a rule, various fairs, symposiums, lectures and seminars, special lessons at schools.
Mountains covers one fourth of our planet; 10% of the Earth's population live in mountainous areas.
Mountains are of special importance for Kazakhstan, especially for Almaty which is located in the foothills of the Trans-Ili Alatau of the Tien Shan range. Snow leopards listed in the Red Book inhabit namely here.
