ASTANA. KAZINFORM - More than 2,500 people in Kazakhstan are on the waiting list to adopt, rep of the Committee on Protection of Children's Rights of the Ministry of Education and Science Manshuk Abdykarim said at the Thursday press briefing.
"More than 2.5 thousand people are ready to adopt a child in Kazakhstan. Almost 10% are eager to adopt a child older than six years old. The rest want to adopt a newborn or a toddler," she elaborated. According to her, the majority of children at orphanages are disabled and that stops prospective parents from making further moves. The orphans are ready to be adopted. But, as a rule, the prospective adoptive families in Kazakhstan hesitate to adopt children with special needs," Manshuk Abdykarim added. It is worth mentioning that foreign families have adopted 8,872 Kazakh-born children throughout the years of Kazakhstan's independence. Those were mostly kids with disabilities or special needs.
