Tajikistan takes global leadership role in cryosphere preservation
At the opening of the High-Level International Conference on Glaciers’ Preservation, Tajikistan reaffirmed its position as a leading voice on water and climate issues, Khovar reports.
In his speech, President Emomali Rahmon unveiled a series of ambitious proposals, including:
Organizing an international scientific expedition to study Tajikistan’s glaciers, including the massive Fedchenko Glacier;
Developing a global strategy for glacier preservation;
Enhancing collaboration on satellite data sharing and cryosphere monitoring;
Expanding the newly established UN Trust Fund for Glaciers’ Preservation.
With over 60% of Central Asia’s glaciers within its borders, Tajikistan is at the frontline of glacier loss.
“This is not only our natural heritage — it is the lifeblood of millions across the region,” Emomali Rahmon stated.
Earlier, it was reported that scientists and experts were set to discuss cryosphere and related hazards at conference in Almaty.
