The Head of the Kazakh Diplomatic Mission congratulated S.Stevenson on reelection and expressed assurance in that the cooperation between the Kazakh Parliament and the reelected European Parliament will further develop on the way of constructive partnership.
The sides discussed the results of the elections to the European Parliament held on June 4-7 and shared opinions on the future of Europe, connected with ratification of the Lisbon Treaty. Y.Utembayev proposed to establish a delegation of the European Parliament for relations with Kazakhstan in order to activate and strengthen cooperation with our country at the new stage.
The interlocutors also discussed the issues of the global and regional security and initiatives of President N.Nazarbayev on announcement of August 29 - the day of official closure of the Semipalatinsk polygon - International Day of nuclear disarmament in commemoration of the polygon's tragedy, victims of the cold war and the nuclear arms race.
S.Stevenson supported the initiative of the Kazakh President and appraised the policy and activity of the Head of our State in provision of the regional security, due to which Kazakhstan today is a founder of such important international initiatives as refuse of the fourth biggest nuclear weapons arsenal in the world, closure of the biggest nuclear test-site in Semipalatinsk, establishment of the nuclear weapon free zone, etc. He also noted that signing the agreement on non-proliferation and voluntary renouncing the nuclear weapon option, Kazakhstan contributed to the provision of peace and stability in the world. Besides, the oncoming Kazakhstan's OSCE chairmanship in 2010 shows the role of Kazakhstan as a regional leader providing stability in Central Asia.
