Statement of Kazakhstan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs

ASTANA. August 28. KAZINFORM Kazakhstan, as a country that has made a strong contribution to reduction and non-proliferation of the weapons of mass destruction, expresses its utmost concern regarding the recent reports on the probable use of chemical weapons in Syria. If confirmed, this should be regarded as a crime against humanity.

We urge the Syrian Government to provide full assistance and security to the team of UN experts who are currently in Syria in order to verify the reported use of chemical weapons. We believe that the perpetrators must be identified and every possible precaution taken to prevent such situations and loss of human life in future.

Kazakhstan calls on the international community to exercise restraint and take into account the final conclusions of the team of UN experts in assessing the situation.

In general, we note that the lengthy and deadly conflict in Syria is going over the limit and requires urgent resolution. The situation there requires concerted efforts of the international community as well as a balanced approach to ceasing the violence in Syria.
