Sound of bamboo flute depicts Japan climate at Milan expo

MILAN. KAZINFORM - The sounds of a traditional Nohkan bamboo flute helped depict Japan's climate at the Expo Milano 2015 on Sunday, as a unique fusion of music and pictures showed the transition of the seasons as well as some of the nation's supernatural characters.

The high-pitched instrument, about 40 centimeters long, is often played in Noh and Kabuki performances. Kumiko Nonaka played in front of visitors to the Japan pavilion, with images projecting Japan's landscape and images of the four seasons such as cherry blossoms and autumn leaves. Nonaka also collaborated with Japanese percussionist Ryo Watanabe against a background of illustrations of bewitching "yokai" specters, described in Japanese folklore and representing people's sense of awe toward nature. The world exposition opened this month in the northern Italian city of Milan and will run through Oct. 31. Source: Kyodo
