Measles situation remains tough in Kazakh capital

Chief sanitary doctor of Astana Sarkhat Beissenova reported on measles situation in the city at an online briefing in the Regional Communications Service, Kazinform News Agency reports.

She said up to 45 new cases are registered in the city every day. As of today, the number of initial measles cases made 3,328, including 1,087 laboratory confirmed ones.

Of them, 71% or 769 are children under 14, 11% or 117 are teens, 18% or 201 are adults. The share of unvaccinated children among those infected remains high – 67% or 725, while 27% are adults with unknown immunization status. And only 6% of those infected are vaccinated children, Sarkhat Beissenova said.

She added that 42% of infected children or 326 were not vaccinated for parental refuse. 28% or 214 had medical exemption. 20% or 149 did not achieve vaccination age, and 5% were not immunized for parents’ negligence.

She reminded of additional mass immunization against measles launched countrywide  in November. 

According to her, 35,754 people have been immunized since November 6. This is 29.5% of those subject to vaccination, including children aged from 6 to 10 months – 7,365 or 30.7%, children aged from 2-4 years – 18,843 or 24.2%, and 4,243 or 70.7% of medical workers. 5,303 children under 18 were additionally immunized.

In her words, 92.3% of children (22,780) aged from 12 to 15 months and 92.6% of children (22,700) aged from 6 to 7 years underwent scheduled immunization.
