The Royal Mounted Canadian Police have warned people to "stay inside, lock your doors" and told motorists to stay away from parts of the city, BBC informs.

A nearby hospital has said it has received two people with gunshot wounds. Police helicopters are over the city as an apparent manhunt is under way. RCMP tweeted they were searching for Justin Bourque, 24, and considered him "armed and dangerous".

Police Constable Damien Theriault told the Associated Press news agency the search was concentrated around two streets in the city.

Mr Theriault would not confirm to Canadian broadcaster CBC that one of those shot was a police officer.
