Roman Shirokov scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot on 84 minutes, when Ali Gokdemir tripped Vladimir Bystrov on the edge of the box, Kazinform refers to RIA Novosti.

"We had chances to score a goal before we did," Capello said. "We wanted to score goals but we didn't have the luck."

After beating Portugal 1-0 on Friday, Russia remain top of Group F with a six-point lead, with Capello's team yet to concede a goal in their four wins. Russia's first two results were a 2-0 win over Northern Ireland and a 4-0 hammering of Israel last month.

"We kept up very, very well for a very long time, fought well," Azerbaijan coach Berti Vogts said. "Our goal here today was to score a goal but we didn't manage to do that."
