Rusio was caught to the top of the head in the second round and went down for the count. When Rubio went down most observers felt his senses were in order as he allowed the referee to count him out. Rubio complained afterwards, stating the referee gave him a fast count and also claiming he beat the count. Golovkin himself was surprised Rubio was counted out by the punch that clipped him, according to Boxing News .

Some fighters, and experts, even questioned whether Rubio intentionally stayed down. Rubio's promoter is so furious that he appears to have dumped the fighter based on his performance. "Rubio was a disgrace. What a way to lose. He was knocked out in two rounds by a punch that wasn't enough to do that. It was deplorable display by Rubio. We expected much more from him. Rubio disappointed the fans. Rubio has nothing to do with us. We have no place for such people," the promoter said categorically.
