The cesium was discovered in greenlings, bottom feeders that sometimes prey on crabs and other small fish.

Professor Shugo Watabe from the School of Marine Biology at Kitsato University believes the lifestyle of the fish brought about the contamination, the euronews reports.

"I think the reason why such high-levels were found in these greenlings is that they ate some mud while trying to eat their food. The cesium got into their system at that point," he said.

The fish were caught at a depth of 15 metres and represent the highest levels of radioactivity found in seafood samples since Japan's nuclear accident in March 2011.
