Quality of life improvement and rights of persons with disabilities to be discussed in Almaty

KAZINFORM The regional seminar dedicated to implementation of the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan "On Special Social Services" and to preparation for the ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities will be held in Almaty on February 29 and March 1, 2012.

The seminar organized by the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Kazakhstan with the support of the Almaty City Department on Coordination of Employment and Social Programs, the UNDP in Kazakhstan reports.

The seminar will bring together representatives of the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Republic of Kazakhstan, heads and specialists of the Department on Coordination of Employment and Social Programs and medical and social institutions of East Kazakhstan and Kostanay oblasts, Almaty and Astana, as well as non-governmental organizations. The key issues of the seminar are - what should be done to create barrier-free environment for people with disabilities in Kazakhstan, changes which are necessary to improve the current legislation in the sphere of disabled people rights protection, what are the prospects for implementation of the Standard on special social services to persons in difficult situations, what are the prospects and problems of social adaptation centers, how to find the ways of cooperation between public authorities, persons with disabilities, representatives of public and business structures and what is the point of view of people with disabilities and representatives of civil society on these issues?

Also, within the seminar the results of series of researches on the creation of conditions for the organization and development of small homes for aged people and persons with disabilities, facilitating unimpeded access to priority social infrastructure facilities and services, training of social workers, as well as the development of home-based special social services will be presented.

This event is being held within a joint project of the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Population of the Republic of Kazakhstan and UNDP "Strengthening of Social Protection of Persons with Disabilities in the Context of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Development of the Special Social Services System"
