Public commissions constantly monitor situation in Kazakhstan's prisons

WARSAW. September 30. KAZINFORM /Timur Bekturganov/ Public commissions are constantly monitoring the situation in Kazakhstan's prisons. Head of the International Law Department of Kazakh Ministry of Justice Elvira Azimova said it at the OSCE Review Conference in Warsaw.

Azimova informed the attendees of the Kazakh Government's activities against torture.

"Under the Convention against Torture, the Universal Periodic Review and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, as well as on the result of the visits of the UN special rapporteur on torture to our country, we received a number of recommendations to improve the performance of the competent state bodies," she noted.

She said that the centers for temporary isolation, adaptation and rehabilitation of juveniles were transferred from the jurisdiction of the Interior Ministry to the Ministry of Education and Science of Kazakhstan. "Human Rights Commissioner, in accordance with his mandate, has the right to have unimpeded access to places of detention, where the situation is also continuously monitored by public monitoring commissions," Azimova stressed.
