"President Nazarbayev and his proponents reached the decision to renounce the nuclear arsenal and turn Kazakhstan into a non-nuclear power under tough conditions, in the times of major turning points in the history of post-Soviet states. Kazakhstan leadership had to deal with criticism and lack of understanding. But relying on the people's will, President Nazarbayev took a step which can be considered as a significant contribution to nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation regimes maintenance, to global security.
