Profound reform of public utilities sector needed - President

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev insisted on speeding up the modernization of utilities and energy sector in his remarks at the extended session of the Government, Kazinform News Agency reports.

In his remarks, the Head of State stressed ensuring smooth running of all public utilities in all populated areas is one of basic functions of the Government and akimats.

However, according to the President, each heating season brings same old story all over again. Authorities do not draw lessons from their previous mistakes as a result the public utilities sector has ended up in its current state. The country already experiences shortages of electricity, heat and water, he said.

President Tokayev urged to launch a profound reform to lie at the heart of a plan for overhauling the public utilities sector. It should entail long-term tariffs, digitalization of the sector, construction of urban solid waste processing plants, greening of cities, etc.

It was noted that accessibility of electricity, heating and water directly affects the quality of people’s life improvement of which is the ultimate goal of the Government.
