ASTANA. April 22. KAZINFORM /Damir Baimanov/ The process of payment of insurance for irreversible damage to the first communication satellite KazSat-1 is nearing completion. Chairman of the Kazakh National Space Agency Talgat Mussabayev informed of it during an online conference on Friday.

The contract to develop and launch KazSat-1 was signed in January 2004. 15 foreign and Russian companies took part in its creation. The satellite was launched on 18 June 2006 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome. Its commercial operation started in November 2006. The satellite was intended for telecast, fixed satellite communication and data transmission. The first malfunction in KazSat-1 occurred on 10 January 2008 - contact with the satellite had been lost. On November 26, 2008 KazSat stopped responding to control signals. The failure was irreversible. In August 2009 it was transferred to a disposal orbit.

According to the agreement on the settlement of insurance claims, Kazakhstan should pay 65% of the cost of spacecraft.
