President of S Korea: Kazakhstan leads and will lead in solution of problem of nuclear weapons non-proliferation

SEOUL. April 22. KAZINFORM /Yernur Akanbay/ Kazakhstan leads and lead in solution of the problem of nuclear weapons non-proliferation in the world. President of South Korea Lee Myung-bak has announced it today at the press conference after the talks with his Kazakh counterpart Nursultan Nazarbayev in Seoul. As is known, Nazarbayev left for South Korea with a two-day visit yesterday.

"The world community highly appreciates the Kazakh President's speech at the Global Nuclear Summit in Washington. I think, Kazakhstan has big experience in non-proliferation of nuclear weapons therefore Kazakhstan plays a leading role on the international arena and will lead in solution of the nuclear energy problems", Lee Myung-bak said.

"After gaining independence Kazakhstan voluntarily renounced it nuclear arsenal. To my mind, Mr. President took a brave and historically important decision at that time. Due to this decision Kazakhstan enjoys prosperity today", the Korean President noted.

According to him, today's negotiations focused also on non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.

"President N. Nazarbayev and I share an opinion that the nuclear problem of North Korea must be solved through multilateral negotiations. We also agreed on strengthening mutual cooperation on the international arena", Lee Myung-bak said.

He also pointed out that in two years South Korea would host a global security summit which would focus on reduction of nuclear armament. Issues regarding non-proliferation of nuclear weapons by North Korea and prevention of nuclear terrorism will be on agenda as well.

"We will actively cooperate with Kazakhstan in this process", the Korean Leader emphasized.
