Packed agenda for CIS summit in St Petersburg

MINSK. October 14. KAZINFORM Nearly 30 draft documents regarding economic cooperation will be high on the agenda of the 58th meeting of the CIS Council of Heads of Government in St Petersburg on 18 October, BelTA learnt from the CIS executive Committee.

According to BelTA, cooperation between the CIS states in the key areas rests on large-scale thoroughly prepared documents. In particular, the CIS economic development strategy through 2020 contains fundamental goals for economic integration. The strategy is divided into three stages, with every stage being implemented following the relevant action plan.

The CIS premiers are expected to consider a draft action plan of the second stage of the CIS economic development strategy. The second stage will be implemented in 2012 through 2015. The major objective of the second stage is to prompt social and economic development of the CIS countries by means of developing interstate innovation space.

The draft plan comprises a set of measures aimed at the establishment of the interstate innovation space development of the interstate trade and economic cooperation based on an effectively functioning free trade zone. The plan also includes measures for creating favorable conditions for the common economic space in the Commonwealth, enhancing efficiency of using material and natural resources, environmental protection, technical cooperation, consumer protection. The focus is also on the events aimed at strengthening cooperation in transport, industry, energy, information and communications services, space and agriculture.

The forthcoming meeting will also consider a draft interstate program for innovative cooperation in the CIS for the period up to 2020. The program is aimed at establishing conditions for improving the global competitiveness of the CIS economies, their transformation into socially-oriented economies, priorities of economic development in innovations based on effective interaction between the national innovation systems.
