Over 8,000 families displaced by floods in S Philippines

COTABATO CITY, Philippines. May 12. KAZINFORM Over 8,000 families have been displaced by flash floods in days of heavy rains in the southern Philippines, officials said Thursday. Kazinform refers to Xinhua.
Pombain Kader, chief of Department of Social Welfare and Development's local office in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, said at least 8,754 families in five villages of Sultan Kudarat town in Maguindanao province have evacuated due to flash floods.
Local officials were providing flood evacuees with relief assistance, said Kader.
The local disaster control department is closely monitoring the situation and preparing for mass evacuation of the affected residents if the situation worsens, officials said. Kazinform cites Xinhua. See www.xinhuanet.com
