Over 2 mln Kazakhstanis back idea on referendum on President's powers extension

UST KAMENOGORSK. January 5. KAZINFORM /Lyudmila Malko/ Over 2, 590, 000 signatures have been collected to date in support of the referendum on extension of the First Kazakh President's powers.
"All of these signatures are official and have been checked at the territorial electoral districts and justice agencies", Chairperson of the East Kazakhstan Initiative Group, academician Yerlan Sydykov has said it to a Kazinform correspondent.
Yesterday the members of the Initiative Group held a briefing in Semey. According to Y. Sydykov, East Kazakhstan, Almaty and Karaganda regions are leading in the number of signatures, which "is quite normal since these are the largest regions of Kazakhstan".
"Collecting the signatures will last till January 10-11", Y. Sydykov noted and added that similar briefing would be held in Ust Kamenogrsk soon.
