OSCE/ODIHR commends professional organization of elections in Kazakhstan
OSCE/ODIHR observers praised the technical organization and transparency of the electoral process in Kazakhstan, Qazinform News Agency reports.
The International Election Observation Mission of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) held a press briefing in Astana on Monday, highlighting several positive aspects of Kazakhstan’s vote organization.
Observers particularly noted the professional and timely technical setup, comprehensive training for members of election commissions, voter information campaigns, and steps taken to make voting accessible to all.
According to the mission, the Central Election Commission (CEC) managed technical preparations professionally and within the timeframe established by the legislation.
ODIHR observers also gave positive feedback on the nationwide cascading training program for election commission members, which they attended firsthand.
Besides, the CEC conducted a comprehensive public awareness campaign and made considerable efforts to ensure accessibility of polling stations for persons with disabilities.
Observers also highlighted the transparency of the CEC’s operations. Commission meetings were held regularly and broadcast live in Kazakh and Russian with simultaneous sign language interpretation. Moreover, all decisions were promptly published on the official CEC website.
In addition, the mission noted that the Qurultay election day was calm and well-organized. International Mission observers positively assessed the opening of polling stations and the voting process in the overwhelming majority of cases.
Altogether, the assessment demonstrates a systematic approach to election administration, ranging from staff training and transparency to public outreach and accessible voting environments.
It is noted that the Mission consistently highlighted the professionalism of election administration and adherence to statutory deadlines as key strengths of the campaign.
Earlier, it was reported that international observers and experts have highlighted the significance of Kazakhstan’s first elections to the new unicameral Qurultay, stressing that the real test of the political reforms will come with the new parliament’s work and its ability to strengthen accountability, representation and public trust.
