One dead as powerful earthquake hits Caribbean

MOSCOW. May 28. KAZINFORM. An earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale hit the Caribbean Sea early on Thursday morning, killing at least one person and destroying homes in Honduras and Belize, regional media said; Kazinform refers to RIA Novosti.

The earthquake occurred at 3:24 am local time [08:24 GMT], 64 kilometers off the Honduras-owned island of Roatan. A number of homes were also destroyed in Belize, most of which had been built on stilts. Tsunami warnings have been issued for both Honduras and Belize; Kazinform cites RIA Novosti.
