"We are developing novel stroke treatment and novel therapies to improve recovery following stroke. Currently, there are no treatments available for patients who have strokes to improve their recovery afterwards," C.Gilman emphasized.

According to him, the project implies clinical testing of a medication titled metformin in three phases.

At the first stage, the clinical tests are conducted on fish danio rerio since their nervous system is very similar to human system. The scientists will give a stroke to the fish by removing the oxygen from the water and then monitor indications and regulate the dosage. Later, the scientists will test their hypothesis in rats.

The third phase implies tests on humans. The project is implemented in partnership with the Republican Diagnostic Center for Emergency Medicine JSC.

It is worth noting that the metformin is already approved for other indications such as diabetes. On the basis of clinical tests, the scientists will try to prove that this drug can also be applied for recovery of patients who had strokes.

The professor of the chemistry and biology department, developer of the medication emphasized the uniqueness and importance of this research. "Currently, there are no treatments available for patients who have strokes to improve their recovery after," C.Gilman resumed.
