No jail term for corrupted top official Murat Ospanov

ASTANA. KAZINFORM - The specialized criminal court of Astana city has delivered its verdict on the much-talked about case of Murat Ospanov, the former head of Natural Monopolies Regulation Agency of Kazakhstan, today, Kazinform has learnt from the Supreme Court of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The court found Ospanov guilty of accepting a multi-million bribe. However, the former top official will not serve jail time. The court ruled out that Murat Ospanov will have to pay a fine amounting to 1 101 060 000 tenge and all his property will be confiscated. He will be stripped of his Kurmet order as well. Earlier it was reported that Mr. Ospanov was accused of accepting at least $300,000 (nearly 55 million tenge) in bribes for protection of an unnamed natural monopoly entity. He was detained on July 1, 2014 on suspicion of accepting the bribe.
