Most affordable homestay city in the world: Toronto

Budget-conscious travelers headed to Toronto may find comfort in knowing that booking a room with a family or property owner in Canada's biggest city runs an average of $20 a night on Homestay.com. On the flipside, a room in a private home in Glasgow runs an average of $61, making the Scottish city the most expensive homestay destination on the list, Relaxnews reports. In their inaugural Homestay Index, researchers collected user data from their own online booking platform, guest and host surveys as well as research from within the vacation rental industry. Homestay's index differs greatly from a listing of the priciest and cheapest listings found on competitor Airbnb. According to GoEuro.co.uk, which conducted the research, Boston will set guests back an average of $273 USD a night for an apartment or studio. At the other end of the spectrum, Tirana, Albania emerged as offering the most affordable destination Airbnb bookings. The Homestay Index also found that nearly half (47 percent) of guests who use short-term vacation rentals are Millennials, aged 18 to 29. The top destinations in terms of bookings in 2014 included London, Dublin and Havana, while Sao Paulo has the largest number of hosts.
