"The Day of remembrance of victims of political repressions and famine is held in Kazakhstan on May 31. It was established back in 1997 in line with my decree as the nation's annual commemoration of repressions and famine. For the entire nation this date is of immense historical significance. Mass political repressions in 1930-40s became a devastating tragedy for millions of people. The greatest sons of the Kazakh nation Shakarim Kudaiberdiyev, Akhmet Baitursynov, Saken Seifullin, Magzhan Zhumabayev, Beimbet Mailin and many others fell prey to totalitarianism. 1.5 million deported Germans, Poles, Koreans and representatives of other nationalities shared the burden of the totalitarian system together with the Kazakh people. Despite tough times, these people found their true home, shelter, understanding and kindness here. It is quite symbolical that this day is held under the aegis of the People's Assembly of Kazakhstan, a unique institute of public consent. Peace, unity and stability are the key principles of Kazakhstan's development in the 21st century and the Kazakhstan-2050 Development Strategy. These timeless values are the solid foundation of Kazakhstan's prosperity. Memory of tragic pages of our history and victims of political repressions and famine is sacred to us," the message reads.
