Memorial plaque to Lithuanian women imprisoned in ALZHIR camp to be opened in Kazakhstan

TANA. October 6. KAZINFORM /Kanat Kulshmanov/ A memorial plaque to the Lithuanian women imprisoned in notorious ALZHIR will be opened in Kazakhstan, President Nursultan Nazarbayev told a press conference after his negotiations with Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite on Thursday in Astana.
"Our experts worked hard to study Kazakh archives, prepared several volumes of archival cases of repressed Lithuanian citizens imprisoned in Stalin's camps. Today, I have conveyed these materials to the President of Lithuania," Nazarbayev said.
ALZHIR was the Akmola Labour Camp for Wives of Political Dissidents during Soviet times. According to incomplete data, the number of repressed exceeded 18 thousand people. The concentration camp was closed in 1953.
