Meeting at Transport and Communications Ministry discusses development of port & service infrastructure

ASTANA. November 19. KAZINFORM - Under the chairmanship of the Minister of Transport and Communications of Kazakhstan Askar Zhumagaliyev there has been carried out a joint meeting of representatives of the authorities and entrepreneurs on the further development of water transport, the press service of the Ministry reports.

The meeting discussed the issues of port and service infrastructure, commercial fleet and promotion safety navigation.
At present time in the port of Aktau city a project is being implemented to expand the port's capacity constructing 3 dry cargo terminals.

Particular attention is paid to enhancing safety and security arrangements for navigation in the Caspian Sea and inland waterways. The Minister gave an instruction to adopt measures for establishment of the port's authority which main task will be to act as port state control in accordance with international requirements. Today, Kazakhstan is involved in 12 international conventions and it works on joining the 10 more conventions and amendments as well as on the implementation of the the conventions' provisions to the national legislation.

As for the development of human resources in maritime transport, in 2012 in Kazakhstan opened Maritime Academy at Kazakh-British Technical University which will prepare the world-class sailors. Along with the development of the educational process the work is being done for bringing the system of seafarers training in line with the Convention of the International Maritime Organization on training and certification of seafarers and Watchkeeping.

For the development of river transport in cooperation with local authorities it is planned to restore the coastal infrastructure, consider the issues of involving river transport for transfer of socially important goods and inert materials for road construction.

In general the topics raised during the meeting are included in the draft state program on the development and integration of transport system's infrastructure by 2020.
