Majilis: capital punishment replaced with life imprisonment

ASTANA. March 22. KAZINFORM. /Zhiger Baitelessov/ The Committee for Legislation and Legal Reforms of the Majilis of Kazakhstan?s Parliament submits for the House?s consideration the draft law on amendments to the Criminal Code on the issues of capital punishment.
It is proposed to outlaw capital punishment and replace it with life imprisonment. Death penalty will be imposed only for the offence of murder and terrorism.
The committee?s sittings were held with the participation of the Supreme Court, General Prosecutor?s Office, as well as ministries of justice, internal affairs, defense and National Security Committee of Kazakhstan.
The draft law is aimed at improving the current criminal and procedural legislation, bringing it into compliance with the Kazakhstan Constitution and ensuring fundamental human right to life.
