Latvian President arrives in Karaganda region

KARAGANDA. June 2. KAZINFORM – Today Andris Bērziņš, the Latvian President, is to arrive in Karaganda region with an official visit, the press service of the Akim of Karaganda region reports.

"A. Bērziņš will unveil the Latvian political prisoners’ monument in Spassk Memorial complex", said the press service of Karaganda region Akim.

The monument was created with the help of the Latvian Embassy to Kazakhstan, the Latvian association of political repression, the "Latvijas Dzelzels" and the "Latvijas Pasts". Pauls Jaunzems, the sculptor, is the creator of the monument.

According to reports 1,074 Latvians had been imprisoned in the camp located in Spassk in 1931-1959.

A. Bērziņš, the President of Latvia, will visit Kazakhstan on June 2-4. In the course of the visit there will be discussed a cooperation in politics and economics expand as well as the possibility of further development of the Northern transport network. On June 3 A.Bērziņš will meet with Nursultan Nazarbayev, the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan. There are also scheduled the meetings with Serik Akhmetov, the Kazakh Prime Minister, and Nurlan Nigmatulin, the Chairman of the Majilis of Kazakhstan.

In addition the Latvian President will take part in the Latvian-Kazakh business forum aiming to establish direct contacts with entrepreneurs for projects implementation.
