Khrogos-Eastern Gate project to bridge Europe and Asia

ASTANA. May 26. KAZINFORM Today during a working trip to Almaty region the Head of State Nusultan Nazarbayev has visited a number of transport-logistic and infrastructure facilities, presidential press service reports.

President Nazarbayev paid a visit to Altynkol railway station at Zhetygen-Korgas railway road and Kazakh-Chinese near-border area where the Khorgos International Border Cooperation Center and special economic zone Khorgos-Eastern Gate are being built.

President of JSC NC Kazakhstan Temir Zholy Askar Mamin familiarized the Head of State with the development concept of the republican transport and logistics system and the work done within the implementation of the instruction on creation of a world-class transport company on the basis of Kazakhstan Temir Zholy. Darryl Hadaway, managing partner of Deloitte in the Caspian region, made a presentation of a project of the Khorgos-Eastern Gate industrial and logistic hub.

President Nazarbayev stressed that implementation of the Khorgos Eastern gate project was of historical importance. It is an important step towards increasing Kazakhstan's transit capacity. It can become a major transit hub in Central Asia and a transport bridge connecting Europe with Asia.

The Head of State also visited a new residential settlement Nurkent near Altynkol railway station.

"China is one of our biggest partners and commodity turnover between our countries is growing on a constant basis. Kazakhstan and its Chinese partners have been waiting for the launch of this project a long time. This will be a significant transport hub between Europe and Asia. The Khorgos International Border Cooperation Center will serve for the benefit of Kazakhstan. We will be able to increase economy volume and implement the Industrial and Innovative Development Program," Nursultan Nazarbayev noted.

The Khorgos International Border Cooperation Center is being built on the initiative of Chinese and Kazakhstani leaders and is aimed at development of near-border commercial and economic, research and technical cooperation and increasing transit and transport potential of two countries.
