Kazakhstani soldiers commemorated in Belgium
On the eve of May 7 Defender of the Fatherland Day, the staff of the Kazakhstan Embassy in the Kingdom of Belgium, together with the Office of the Military Attaché and members of the Kazakh diaspora, took part in a wreath-laying ceremony in the city of Genk, Qazinform News Agency reports.
According to the embassy, the event was dedicated to honoring soldiers who heroically fell during World War II. Flowers were laid at a memorial to the Belgian Resistance, whose ranks also included Soviet soldiers.
Approximately 350 Soviet servicemen are buried across Belgium. The largest burial site is in Genk, Limburg Province, with around 70 graves. At the center of the memorial stands an inscription: “Eternal memory to the Soviet soldiers who fell on Limburg soil, 1941-1944.”

Among those laid to rest are natives of Kazakhstan, Togaybay Uvaliev and Nuradim Bissenov, who died in 1944.
Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Belgium Roman Vassilenko noted: “Preserving the memory of our ancestors’ heroism is an integral part of our historical responsibility and a foundation for educating future generations. Such commemorative events strengthen the continuity between generations and remind us of the value of peace and harmony.”
The Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan will continue its efforts to preserve historical memory and to honor the legacy of those who defended their homeland.
Earlier, it was reported that at a solemn ceremony in Akorda, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev handed over special insignia - the Gold Star and the Order of Otan- to Makhambet Kenzhebayuly, son of the Great Patriotic War veteran Kenzhebay Madenov.
