Kazakhstan-UN Refugee Agency coop discussed

ASTANA. May 23. KAZINFORM /Serik Sabekov/ Minister of Foreign Affairs Yerzhan Kazykhanov has met with Saber Azam, Regional Representative-Coordinator of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for Central Asia, in Astana today.

The parties discussed the urgent issues of cooperation between Kazakhstan and the UN High Commissioner's Office for Refugees.

Speaking on the role of the UNHCR as a major international supporter of refugees, the Kazakh Minister said that observance of human rights, including the rights of refugees and migrants, is one of the priority objectives of the national policy. In this view, the Kazakh side expresses firm readiness for open dialogue on the whole range of issues of bilateral interaction, in particular, studying the experience of the UNHCR and exchanging experience in granting the refugee status, improvement of the mechanisms and the system of assisting asylum-seekers and reducing statelessness.

In turn, upon completion of the meeting Mr. Azam expressed satisfaction with the talks. "We have discussed the issues of strengthening our cooperation. I used this meeting to express gratitude to the Kazakhstan Government for its support to a large number of refugees and asylum-seekers", he said.
