The publication is a comprehensive review of the energy policy and development of the sector in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldavia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan. The document defines the challenges to the energy sector including building of the infrastructure, low energy efficiency, unused alternative energy potential and badly functioning regional energy markets.

The published report of the International Energy Agency praises the achievements of Kazakhstan regarding a promising approach to development of the energy sector, adoption of the state concept on transition to the green economy that provides for an ambitious task on having 50% of the renewable energy in the total volume of the energy balance of the country by 2050.

"This is the first regional review held by the International Energy Agency in the countries which are not the members of the organization. I am very glad that the event is taking place in Kazakhstan, the country that has become even more important for the European Union. It is quite notable that Kazakhstan has tuned into one of the biggest energy suppliers in terms of clean technologies, energy efficiency and renewable energy sources," Head of the EU representation in Kazakhstan Aurelia Bouchez noted.
