Kazakhstan can become Customs Union e-commerce leader - Sabirov

ASTANA. KAZINFORM "Provided that our country gets legislative privileges Kazakhstan can become a leader of e-commerce in the Customs Union," head of the Internet Association of Kazakhstan Shavkat Sabirov told in an interview for Primeminister.kz during ASTEX 2014 International Exhibition and Conference.

"If we now create a stimulus, for example, remove the VAT on e-commerce for the first five years, as it was once done in the U.S., then we will take away all financial flows from Russia and become a financial "monster" like Singapore. We have easier financial conditions, so if we give benefits, tools Kazakhstan can become a leader in the Customs Union and Single Economic Space. We can take away this e-commerce market," Sabirov said.

According to him, Kazakhstan has sufficient technical basis to be a leader of electronic commerce in the CU.

However, he believes, there are several barriers that hinder dynamic development of this segment. The first factor is the small number of e-commerce sites, which, according to Sabirov, may change in six months, as the e-commerce market is growing very fast. The second factor to deal with is logistics. The process of delivery of goods from the manufacturer to the online buyer can take several years.
