Kazakhstan and Belgium: towards scientific technological cooperation

BRUSSELS. May 27. KAZINFORM. /Yerzhan Ospanov/ Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Kazakhstan to Belgium Yerik Utembayev has visited Nuclear Research Centre of Belgium (CEN) in the city of Mol in order to expand Kazakh-Belgian cooperation in the spheres of energy, scientific research and advanced technologies. The visit was arranged on the recommendation of King Albert II of Belgium who pays special attention to the issues of partnership in the field of nuclear technologies.
At the meeting with the management and personnel of CEN the Kazakh diplomat was informed of the main directions in the activity of the center, history of its development since 1952, structure and technologies.
Y. Utembayev told them about the measures on Kazakhstan?s post-crisis development outlined in the President?s Address to the Nation ?Through Crisis to Renovation and Prosperity? and Nazarbayev?s speech at the XII Congress of ?Nur Otan? People?s Democratic Party. Special attention was paid to Kazakhstan?s strategy on economic diversification, intensive industrialization, development of oil and gas sector, atomic energy, space industry, transport corridors, non-primary productions and infrastructure.
The diplomat also briefed on the activity of ?Kazatomprom? JSC, one of the world?s leading uranium production companies developing cooperation with the largest European, Asian, Russian and American companies. He noted that in 1997 Kazakhstan and the USA signed a long-term agreement on peaceful uses of atomic energy. Analogous document was concluded between Kazakhstan and the European Union in 2006. In 2007 Japan and Kazakhstan also agreed to enhance their strategic partnership.
The representatives of the Nuclear Research Center spoke highly of the Kazakh President?s policy and initiative to create a nuclear fuel bank under the auspices of the IAEA on the territory of Kazakhstan.
The Belgian side suggested signing the Kazakh-Belgian agreement on cooperation in the atomic sphere.
