Kazakh wrestlers claim 3 gold medals at World Qazaq Kuresi Championship in Baku
Team Kazakhstan has claimed three gold, one silver and one bronze medals on the first day of the XII World Qazaq Kuresi Championships among adults, ongoing in Baku, Azerbaijan, Qazinform News Agency reports.
The championship, taking place on 22-23 August at the Baku Sports Hall, features athletes from various countries competing for 16 sets of medals both in men’s and women’s weight categories.
In the men’s division, Ruzimon Tugushev won gold in the 55 kg category, defeating Tajikistan’s Moboriz Borotzoda in the final. Ernur Suleiman added another gold in the 60 kg weight division, beating Georgia’s Giorgi Inashvili. The third gold went to Zhumazhan Kozhambekov in the 74 kg category, where he beat Tajikistan’s Mukhamadrajab Khuseinzoda.

Kazakh women also contributed to the medal tally: Ardak Nursak took silver in the 60 kg category, while Zhanat Kazez earned bronze in the 48 kg class.
Addressing the opening ceremony, Kazakhstan’s Ambassador to Azerbaijan Alim Bayel highlighted Qazaq Kuresi as part of the nation’s heritage, symbolizing courage, strength and dignity. He wished athletes fair competition and success, noting that international tournaments strengthen friendship among nations.

Qazaq Kuresi is now practiced in more than 40 countries worldwide, and hosting the championship in Baku underscores growing global interest in Kazakhstan’s national wrestling.
The competition continues on 23 August, with the remaining eight sets of medals to be contested.
Earlier, it was reported that Azerbaijan's Baku will host the XII World Qazaq Kuresi Championships among adults, scheduled for August 22-23, 2026.
