Kazakh scientist discovers new bacterial species

Kazakh scientist Serik Bakiyev, together with a team of scientists, has found a new bacterium named Aeromonas oralensis, Qazinform News Agency learnt from the Kazakh Science and Higher Education Ministry.

The new species was discovered in 2025 during studies in microbiology and aquatic ecosystem ecology.

Serik Bakiyev is the head of biology, chemistry, and environmental programs at the Utemissov West Kazakhstan University.

His research covers biodiversity conservation, aquaculture, antibiotic resistance, and molecular genetics.

Serik Bakiyev holds a PhD from Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, where he studied bacteriophage endolysins for disinfecting pathogens in sturgeon fish.

His research has been implemented in aquaculture practices in Oral.

He also actively teaches genetics, ecology, and bioindication, while participating in grant-funded projects.

He authored 59 scientific publications, including articles indexed in Web of Science and Scopus.

His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in water resource conservation.

Serik Bakiyev was awarded the Leader of the Year – 2017 prize and the badge Best Young Scientist – 2022 in the CIS.
