Kazakh schoolchildren stun IMO 2014 in South Africa

ASTANA. KAZINFORM - Students from Kazakhstan hauled 6 medals at the 55th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) held in Cape Town, South Africa from 3 to 13 July, 2014.

The IMO brought together 612 schoolchildren from 201 countries, including the U.S., Germany, Bulgaria, France, Japan, China, Russia, Brazil, Canada, Romania, Great Britain, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, Italy and many more. Grade 10 student Akhan Ismailov from Almaty clinched gold. Sergazy Kalmyrzayev from Skymkent collected silver. Alisher Tortai and Yerzhan Imanmalik from Almaty, Daniyar Kamal from Taraz and Kuandyk Altykhanov from Astana won bronze at the event. This year Kazakhstan showed its best result at the IMO so far by being ranked 23rd among 101 participating countries. The IMO is a problem-solving contest for high school students, held in a different country in July every year.
