Kazakh PM Bektenov points to road infrastructure problems during government session

Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov highlighted the issue of poor mobile communication on highways across Kazakhstan, as more people got in an accident fail to reach out emergency services, Kazinform News Agency correspondent reports.

Bektenov spoke of the Karaganda-Almaty highway as an example, on which a 500km section spanning three regions has no mobile communication.

In case of road crashes, those suffered are unable to reach out emergency service, said the Kazakh Prime Minister, assigning the digitalization ministry with stepping up mobile communication coverage on outer roads.

Bektenov went on to add that the country’s roads lack CCTV cameras and other technical means to ensure traffic safety.

Our residents have sent over 50 thousand official complaints in the field of road traffic since the beginning of the year, stated Prime Minister Bektenov.

In this regard, the Kazakh Premier urged local authorities to increase the number of CCTV cameras in populated areas as well as use actively hardware and software systems on roads of republican significance.

Bektenov added that most roads in Kazakhstan were constructed as per the outdated standards, while construction and repairs of some roads drags on for years. Moreover, road sections where construction work is in progress often miss road signs, information boards and temporary markings.

The Kazakh Prime Minister instructed the transport ministry together with interested state bodies to take a set of measures to ensure traffic safety during road construction, reconstruction and maintenance as well as to toughen control over strict observation of standards in road construction and repairs.
