Kazakh Foreign Minister, US Secretary of State talked over phone

  ASTANA. January 15. KAZINFORM Kazakh Foreign Minister Yerzhan Kazykhanov and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton talked over the phone on Saturday, Kazakh MFA's press service reported.

The sides discussed the prospects of strategic partnership between the two countries. They noted that over the past 20 years since the beginning of diplomatic relations the countries passed a long way and laid a solid foundation for further strengthening of broad cooperation. This cooperation covers areas such as security, nonproliferation of weapons of mass destruction, energy, economic development, strengthening of regional stability, as well as the promotion of democratic processes.

Kazykhanov told Clinton about the work done on the preparation and holding of the elections, stressing that the elections represent an important step towards democratic progress, sustainable social and economic development.

Hillary Clinton expressed support for Kazakhstan's commitment to holding free and fair elections, stressing the openness of the country and invitation of a large number of foreign observers. She stressed that the decision to hold elections in Zhanaozen, made by the Kazakh President contrary to the opinion of the Constitutional Council and motivated by interests of ensuring the constitutional rights of all Kazakhstanis, was a clear indication of the commitment to the rule of law and democracy.
